My experiences at DAVMUN 2010

Well, here I am back again. After National Abilympics, I had been really working hard for DAVMUN 2010 on the 13th, 14th and 15th November. As it is, it was my first MUN, and then I was selected for the UNSC, which is suppose to be the toughest committee involving intensive debate and discussion. I was really nervous. After the opening ceremony on the 13th, the conference was declared open by the Sec. Gen. Our chair, Arkaprava Bokshi was extremely nice, also supportive, cooperative and helpful. So goes for other executive board members. And before that, let me tell you that I was the delegate of the United States of America. After voting on the order of agenda, it was decided that the committee will be discussing `situation in south Asia` pertaining to Taliban insurgency and Kashmir issue before the 2nd agenda, i.e. governance of Antarctica. Subsequently, a few GSL speeches followed. After the lunch, it was my turn to deliver my speech. Almost all the delegates had alligations against USA. Somehow, I managed to overcome them. As far as I remember, we also had a mod caucus on the Kashmir issue, wherein the delegates of India and Pakistan were actually at war with each other (LOL!). After this solutions to the Kashmir issue were discussed and deliberated upon, the best one being peaceful bilateral negociations between the two countries. We also had a mod caucus on solutions to combat Taliban insurgency. The session concluded and we were asked to write working papers on the solutions. That night, I slept at about 1. It was really tiring.

Next day, again ready with the same enthusiasm and passion for MUNing. The day started with a discussion on human rights, or in fact, to be more specific, the rights of women in Afghanistan. Soon after, the Sec. Gen. with the deputy Sec. Gen. came in with a crisis. It went like this:

a. In Dehradun, a joint military training exercise underway between India and Russian Federation
b. Attacked by a missile from the disputed region of China
c. Suspects traced to Australia; Australian nationals

I was thinking of making a statement, and just then another update was received:

d. Interrogation reveals that the attack was state-sponsered by the Government of United States of America.

I was asked to make a statement soon. Well, my statement was I don’t know how. It went something like this:

“Our deepest condolences with the Govts. Of India and Russian Federation in this period of grief and mourning.USA strongly condemns the attack. Further, the American Constitution enshrines strict condemning of state-sponsered terrorism. As our President has put across, “USA condemns all sorts of terrorism, especially state-sponsered terrorism.” Further, the delegate would like to bring before the committee that the Reuters report only claims, not proves US’s intervention. It was any ways not wise to simply believe on what the suspects have said. Until and unless, intelligence sources confirm US intervension, the Govt. will not be answerable. Further, if it is found that the elements of the US Govt. are responsible, then they will be prosecuted to the maximum extent possible under the law.”

I hope it was a bit convincing. We were then faced with the task of forming solutions and recommendations for the crisis, and thereby writing a resolution. The resolution was unanimously passed by all the delegates. The entire day went in the crisis hence. At the end, we also review one working paper on Taliban insurgency framed by the sponsors: delegates of People’s Republic of China, Russian Federation and Bosnia and Herzegovina. We did not discuss it though, and were asked to write and format the working papers in a proper manner by the next morning. As soon as I reached my home, the work sarted immediately: collaboration with the delegates of India, France, UK etc. At about 12:30 AM, the resolution was ready.

The ultimate day: It began with a few speeches under the speaker’s list and then a thorough review of the 1st working paper. Several provisions went against my foreign policy, to which I responded by asking the other block to delete it, or else get vetoed. Well, all those provisions were deleted, and even then I abstained from voting, though I’d promised something else. Then was our resolution: it did have several flaws, many of which were pointed out by the Exec Board. After bringing about amendments etc., both the resolutions were put to vote (after the possoibility of a merger was denied by my block members: France, UK etc.). The first resolution failed with 6 yes’s, 4 no’s and 5 abstains. The second resolution, i.e. the one that I’d sponsored passed, an was adopted. This brought us to the culmination of the DAVMUN 2010 UNSC discussions. Nervous and keeping my fingers crossed, I proceeded to the closing ceremony. The results were announced-best delegates: Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China. I was somewhat disappointed and disillusioned, however at the same time, accepted it as those guys were quite experienced, and this was my first MUN. Then followed Best Delegate High Commendation Awards, and it turned out to be United States of America and Bosnia and Herzegovina. I was extremely elated. This was definitely convincing, considering this being my 1st MUN. I was really very very happy about this, and I just hope that such fantabulous experiences at MUNs go on and on!

Yesterday was also the 13th National Science Olympiad. According to the answer key on te PCCP Resonance’s website, I’m securing a 48/50, which is pretty good. For the benefit of the readers, I am also furnishing the hyperlink for the website where one can find the key for the esterday’s paper.

For now, I’m studying: have an MT on Monday. Will write in soon!

My experiences at the 3rd National Abilympics

Posting in here after a long time. In this post, I would like to share my experiences at the 3rd National Abilympics 2010 organised by National abilympics Association of India and Samanvay Parivar Trust, Jabalpur. This time, the event was organized at Jabalpur City, Madhya Pradesh, and this was the first time this event was organized out of the nCT of Delhi. I did not participate in the Regionals, and so had to qualify a skill test for participating in this event. So, after clearing the skill test conducted by Amar Jyoti, I got to participate here. I left Delhi on the 20th and reached Jabalpur on the 21st morning. Soon, we were welcomed by the organizers and the officials, and were shown our lodgings. The 21st passed off quite uneventfully. Certain formalities were completed such as registration, distribution of kits etc. I made friends with other contestants. My mom also went out for shopping, while I practiced for the next day, which was the contest day. Fortunately, I had been sharing the room with a Computer teacher, and her guidance and last minute tips proved to be highly benefitial for me.

Let’s jump onto 22nd: I was somewhat tensed, as I, a young fellow of 16 years, was to compete with contestants who aged between 16 and 35, majority of them being older than me. Yet, I kept cool and was optimistic. After a prayer and the breakfast, we stepped into the labs for the competition to commence. I had been competing in English Word Processing event which requires you to type a text of about 5-6 pages, and then applying formatting and using advance word processing skills. The competition started at 9:30. Thanks to my typing speed, I could complete the entire typing of the task assignment within 55 Mins. The judges were supposedly somewhat impressed by my performance. Yet, I had apprehensions about the formatting part. This was because the screen reading software that I use to work on the computer does not support some formatting features and it is not possible to set the exact alignment of graphical objects etc. Adding to this was the fact that I was the only visually challenged contestant. Yet, I thought, “Something that has to happen will happen.” I used all the formatting features that I knew, and applied the various skills that I knew of. After a lot of toil and hard work, the competition ended at 12:30. I came out of the premises a little earlier than the allotted time. Soon after, the opening ceremony began and several dignitaries graced the occasion. It was a colourful cultural show put up by the students of Jabalpur. Soon after, the lunch began, and then there was nothing to do. So, my mom and my aunt accompanying me decided to go to the market (well, they’re very fond of shopping!), and we left for the local markets. By the time I returned, I was so tired that I decided to refresh myself by an icecream. Now, consider this situation: I’m holding an icecream and at the same time, the announcement: “results of English Word Processing are out. Contestants are requested to look them up on the notice board at the registration counter.” Extremely nervous and terrified, I approached the registration counter. I had lost all hopes for the 1st position, as by then, I’d learnt of the fact that the `Gold Medalist` of the last Nationals was also competing again. Nervous me moves towards the notice board. My mom looks up the result from the 2nd position, my name not being there. Depressed and dejected, we moved back. Then soon, my mom decided to look up the board to find the 1st position: and it was…….Kartik Sawhney. I jumped with joy. The feeling at that point is inexpressible. Congratulatory comments followed, and I was actually proud of my achievement. This followed the Award Distribution Ceremony. At the same time, I resolved to work even harder and promised myself getting a `Gold Medal` for my country in the internationals as well. Oh well before that, let me tell you, I’ve been now selected to represent India at the International Abilympics at Seoul, South Korea next year.

23rd October: Morning was quite uneventful, chatting to a few people and taking rest. Then was a wonderful visit to the eminent Beda Ghat of Jabalpur. The enthralling view of the high-speed waves of Narmada river were spellbounding and caught the attention of one and all. then staged was a beautiful cultural show, wherein incidently I too decided to put up a song, which was (as a matter of fact) praised and liked by all. The program was actually one of the best things for me, apart from the result (well, of course!)

24th October: Today was when I was to depart. In the morning after some events, the closing ceremony materialized which was again graced by several dignitaries. And with that, the grand-scale organization of the 3rd National Abilympics 2010 Jabalpur concluded. And thanks due to the organizing committee and the executive team in Delhi and Jabalpur who worked tirelessly to make this a success!

And now, I’m occupied preparing for the DAVMUN 2010 on the 13th, 14th and 15th November in the SC, representing USA. This is my 1st MUN, so definitely very nervous! Well, for now, keeping my fingers crossed.

Local Bal Shree Camp Experience

I participated in the Local Bal Shree Camp organised by National Bal Bhavan. Here, this check you on your talents (dance/music/dromatics etc.). This was the first stage of the selection process. It was simply a fantabulous experience! I made friends with several people out there: Prabhat, Kushagra-to name a few... Firstly, we were welcomed with a few games, so that we could feel comforted. We then stepped into the main selection process, which consisted of three sessions. In the first session, all of us were to present whatever we had prpeared for the competition. So, I sang raga Kedar (Indian Classical Music). It was fine. After lunch, the second session commenced, wherein we were divided into eleven groups of four people each, and each of us were given 10 Mins. to prepare something on the theme provided to us. Our group was given `shopkeeper and beggar`. We enacted how the shopkeeper was a good person, and he had resolved to bring about a change, and how the world found his noble ideas to be boring and useless. That was it for the day. For the next day, we had been divided into four groups, and we had to create a presentation of 10 Mins. on any topic/issue of our topic. We chose upliftment of the women as our topic, and enacted a journey of a women. We also sang a self-composed song on the issue. The skit was well-appreciated by everyone. Finally, the selection process culminated, and after the lunch, I returned. However, the moment when I had to depart and leave the circle of the close friends that I had knit during the selection process was very bad for me and most probably for them too. I am still waiting for the result declaration. They are expected to be declared next week. Further, I also took IIO 2010 yesterday. It was an average paper, though the difficulty of the paper has been enhanced from last year. According to my estimation and the key available on PCCP Resonance's website (which has a number of errors though), I hope to secure a 90/100, and am expecting a rank in top 10. Let's see what happens. For now, It's Kartik Sawhney signing off..........

The MUN experience, and lot's more...

I'm yet again after a very long time. Can't help it, I had so many things to complete, so many homework pending and then CCE activities.....Oh God! The vacations got over a long time ago. The first important thing the moment I returned was the JSTS interviews, which were conducted on July14. My interview was pretty OK, except or a few tricky questions put down by the Chem. interviewer. Some of the ques. that I remember now-it's a long time though!

Bio.:

1. What do you mean by anaerobic and aerobic respiration? What is Kreb's cycle?
2. What would you use to preserve slides? (70% formalin solution-I think)

I don't remember any more.

Phy.:

1. You have a wire of say resistance r. You cut it into two equal pieces. What will happen to the resistance?
2. What is SONAR?
3. For echos to be heard, what's the Min. distance? Derive it.
4. What is RADAR?
5. Give two applications of fiber optic? State the principle? (Here, I just knew one of the applications, but was totally clueless about its application in medicine)

Chem.;

1. Atomic structure
2. N+L rule
3. What is Arrhenius acid/base? What about Lewis acid/base? (Luckily, I'd read it a few days ago)
4. What base is there in cucumber and karela (the vegetable)? (No ideas!)
5. Variation in trends across periods and groups in periodic table. (easy!)

That's it I can remember.

Next on the list was some cultural quiz organised by Belurmat. It was a fine quiz, a little tricky. 22nd July, class X G-my class held its morning assembly. It was a really nice assembly-everybody praised it. From dances to sogs, from speeches (especially Sumair's) to co-ordination, everything was in order and superb. Then, on the 23rd July......a big day.....early in the morning, I went in for an inter-school `Postcards from Paris`, the French fest at DPS International in the presentation design competition. We spoke well, and the PPT was also quite nice. Yet, I don't know the reason for our failure at the contest. Next on the list-the same day. I reached the school at 1:15 and rushed to the AVH for the MUN final auditions. Well, the agenda was child soldiers and I was to represent Rwanda (for those of you who don't know, it's a developping nation in Africa). I couldn't research much, as I also have to prepare for the inter-school. Yet, MUN is not only research, but also spontaneity, ideas and a lot more. So probably, all this helped me. It was a fantastic experience. I put forward my ideas about 2-3 times, and was well-appreciate by the executive board. Apart from that, I found the overall experience to be simply very exhilarating. What' an awesome debate it was! I had expected that I would qualify MUN. And fortunately, I did so. I was a part of the top 24 students who finally made it to the MUN club of our school. Mean while, I also became a member of Le Crayon d'Or, French Club at DPS RKP as co-ordinator, poetry recitation-class X. I have resolved to contribute as much as possible to the growth of this club. I will now have to sign off! Have to study for the Maths MT.
